Viacom and CBS Might Merge After All

The Hollywood-level drama around media conglomerate Viacom (NASDAQ: VIA) (NASDAQ: VIAB) has taken yet another turn: National Amusements, the majority owner of both Viacom and fellow media giant CBS (NYSE: CBS), has called for the two “to consider a potential combination of the companies.” In the official letter delivered to Viacom and CBS, National Amusements wrote, “We believe that a combination of CBS and Viacom might offer substantial synergies that would allow the combined company to respond even more aggressively and effectively to the challenges of the changing entertainment and media landscape.” It added that it is “not willing to accept or support (i) any acquisition by a third party of either company or (ii) any transaction that would result in National Amusements surrendering its controlling position in either company or not controlling the combined company.” Neither Viacom or CBS has commented extensively on the letter. …read more
